The Hillside Teachers’ College

Hillside Teachers’ College is a Government Secondary Teachers’ College. The college was established in 1956 and is situated in the city of Bulawayo. The college lies approximates 6km on the South-East of the city centre.

Mandate: Our mandate is to develop quality teachers for the lower and upper secondary schools in the country. The student teachers specialise in Science, Mathematics, Commercials Practical Subjects, Languages and Humanities.

Vision: We aspire to be the premier centre in the development of innovative secondary teachers in the country and the region.

Mission: We are committed to the development of an empowered, conscientious, creative and responsive teacher for the socio-economic transformation of the community.

Student Population: Current intake in the college including those out on Teaching Practice is about 1500 students.

PROGRAMMES OFFERED

  1. THREE YEAR POST ‘O’ LEVEL

Prospective students for this programme must have attained at least five O-Level passes at grade C or better, including English Language, Science and Mathematics.

    Practicals: Agriculture; Music , Art & Design, Physical education & Foundations of Sport
  • Languages: French, Portuguese, TshiVenda, Tjikalanga, SeSotho and ChiTonga
  1. TWO YEAR POST ‘A’ LEVEL

Prospective students for this programme must have attained at least two A-Level passes at grade E or better.

4.1 THEORY OF EDUCATION

Theory of education is a core subject offered to all students. It provides the foundations of education through theories. It aims to produce an inclusive and competent teacher.

4.2 PROFESSIONAL STUDIES

Professional Studies is one of the core subjects in Teacher Education Curriculum. Professional Studies endeavours to marry theory with practice so that the pre-service teacher is guided accordingly. The subject covers Teaching Methods, Research, Educational Media and Technology, Educational Management & Administration; Guidance & counselling in Education.

4.3 TEACHING PRACTICE

The department is the melting point of the institution in that all theory acquired in various subject areas is put into practice under the close supervision of University of Zimbabwe Teacher Education Department. Post ‘O’ Level go to Teaching Practice for three terms and Post ‘A’ Level go for two terms.

4.4 NATIONAL STRATEGIC STUDIES

The subject area is offered to all the students who enrol at the institution. It aims to produce a person who is likely to make the best use of Zimbabwe and its resources.

4.5 Health and Life Skills

The subject area promotes awareness of health issues and children’s rights.

4.6 INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

The subject area seeks to equip students with ICT skills and how they can effectively integrate ICT in their respective subject areas.

4.7 CHISHONA

The subject area enrols post ‘A’ Level candidates who wish to become Chishona teachers in secondary schools. The subject covers aspect like uvaranomwe; mhenenguro,Tsika nemagariro avaShona, ruzha rwomutauro and dudzira mutauro.

4.8 ISINDEBELE

The subject area enrols post ‘A’ Level candidates who wish to train as IsiNdebele Teachers in secondary schools. The subject covers aspects like, Imikhuba lamasiko esiNdebele, ulimi lokukhulumisana.

4.9 ENGLISH

The English subject area seeks to develop a teacher who is articulate, resourceful and sensitive to the needs of learners in their diversity. The subject area covers language skills, language phonetics, Western and African poetry (Literature) and Methodology.

The subject area falls under Modern Languages. The subject area content includes French Language structure, French etiquette, Translation and Philosophy of French Language.

4.11 PORTUGUESE

The subject area falls under Modern Languages. Portuguese is intended for beginners who wish to acquire Portuguese communicative competence.

4.12 MUSIC

This subject falls under the practicals department. The students study the following aspects: Practicals, Theory of Music, History and Development of History and Methodology in Music Education.

4.13 ART & DESIGN

The subject area falls under the department of practicals. The course content covers Philosophy of Art & Design, Computer Art & Design, Graphic design & Lettering, drawing, creative art and Textile Design.

4.14 PHYSICAL EDUCATION & FOUNDATIONS OF SPORT

The subject area falls under the department of Practicals. It enrols students with 5 ‘O’ Levels including English Language, Mathematics and Biology. The subject area covers both Practicals and Theory in Physical Education. Students learn various sporting activities such as tennis, cricket, soccer, netball, volleyball, etc

4.15 AGRICULTURE

The subject area aims at moulding competent Agriculture teachers in Zimbabwe. The course covers soil science, crop science & production, Animal science, Horticulture, Agriculture Engineering, Forestry & wildlife, Economic Agriculture and History of Agriculture.

4.16 GEOGRAPHY

The subject area seeks to produce teachers who understand, interpret and respond to ever changing physical, political, socio-economic and environmental challenges. The students study Physical Geography, Human Geography, Methodology and practicals.

4.17 HISTORY

The subject area seeks to develop in students, an awareness, of the social, economic, political, cultural and physical aspects of environmental issues and their impact on their societies. The content covers World History 1800, African History from early times and Methodology in the teaching of History.

4.18 MATHEMATICS

The subject area strives to produce quality, reflective and STEM –oriented secondary school teachers. The subject area offers in-service and refresher courses in Mathematics Education for secondary school in-service teachers.  The students study Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Mathematics Education.

  1. 19 SCIENCE

The subject area has four components which are Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Science Education. Students do all the components in the first year and then specialise in their final year.

4.20 COMMERCIALS

The subject area seeks to produce knowledgeable and effective teachers in the disciplines of commercials. The area has five course components which are Accounting, Business Studies, Economics, Commerce and Teaching Methods in Commercials.
